What a loaded question: How do you decide what the best family vacation is? What are the top summer vacations you could go on as a family? This is a difficult question because you may have one idea while your spouse and kids may have another one, two or twenty. Because of this, it is important that the decision is made as a family with all old enough and capable people putting thier “two cents” in. Before actual destination places are voted on, however, everyone needs to be on the same page. Draw out a list of everything that should be taken into account.
The very basics should include:
1. Your budget: This will include an overall range including, but not limited to flight/gas prices, hotel stay, car rental, food money, fun money, and souviner money.
2. Age of children: While older children will struggle with this point if they have very young siblings, make sure to take into account that a skiing trip with a 2 year old may not be that fun, or that staying at a Nickelodean Hotel for a 16 year old may not be as fun either.
3. Time frame: How long can you take off? 3 days of vacation will be much different than a week or ten days. Don’t try and do too much in too little of time. You will come back feeling frustrated and like you did not get your money’s worth.
4. Time of year: This of course may be a no brainer, but it might not be to a 11 year old trying to help plan what they want to do. If you are taking a trip over spring break, then taking your family to a Mexican destination may not be the greatest idea.
If you, your spouse, and your children take the above list (and add to it as you see necessary) then you will have a good starting point in deciding where you are going to go for your best family vacation! The point is to be inclusive of the whole family so that everyone gets to help decide and plan it. The older children will learn some about budgeting and planning, and the younger ones can be involved as well.
