What to do on Captiva Island?

After my wife and I moved to Naples FL, we had exhausted the local entertainment opportunities pretty quickly. As we got more and more adventuresome we eventually started visiting Fort Myers Beach, Sanibel and Pine Island. Fort Myers Beach is great for the tourists, Sanibel is a big money resort town and Pine Island is famous for its fishing and art communities, and each island has its charms. But by far our favorite turned out to be a 5 mile spit of land off the north of Sanibel island called Captiva island.

The first reason we love Captiva is its great shelling. Although Sanibel is world famous for the number and quality of seashells, Captiva is hands down a better place. The reason is simple-location! The sanibel beaches have been shelled constantly by tourists for decades, and despite the no-live-catch rule for shells, time and tourists have taken their toll. A short drive over the bridge and the quality of seashells goes way up.

The second reason we love Captiva is the South Sea’s island resort. My wife and I got married in Mexico, but confess we’re jealous that two of our friends said their vows at South Sea’s. The place really has everything, shopping, restraunts, 4 star accomidations and the rooms have views to die for. When we have a spare weeknd, we often check the rates and have a mini-vacation.

Lastly, we love Captiva because of the Bubble Room, a local restraunt and an island fixture for decades. For the first time visitor, The Bubble Room can be a little hard to get used to-their waiters dress like boyscouts, and almost every surface is covered with Kitsch from the 30′s, 40′s and 50′s. So why do we go back time and time again? The food is great, and you just can’t help but appreciate the absurdity of the structure and its contents-its like the best part of your grandma’s basement in LSD. I mean the dcorations, not the food!
