Family Snorkeling: Fun, But Use the Right Equipment!

With summer coming up, its time to head for the beach with your family and enjoy some water sports, such as snorkeling. Snorkeling is a fun activity that anyone who knows how to swim can do, since you don’t need any special training.  And if you plan to take a family vacation this summer, remember: you can also snorkel in any available body of water such as a lake, a pond or even a quarry. All you need is the right equipment such as a diving mask, snorkel and fins, which are not that expensive.

A diving mask is designed to keep the water out of your eyes so you can see clearly underwater. When your eyes are surrounded by water, light is refracted so your eyes can’t focus correctly; the mask corrects this situation. While the majority of diving masks are the flat type, some manufacturers now offer masks that are slightly curved to provide better peripheral vision. When buying masks, make sure that they fit comfortably on your face with a good seal that does not allow water to enter.

A snorkel is a curved tube that allows the user to breathe when underwater. The mouthpiece fits in your mouth and the snorkel is attached to the side of your dive mask by a strap. Some snorkels also come with a drainage valve that allows the snorkeler to clear the water out of the breathing tube, or a sump that allows a small amount of water to stay in the tube without being inhaled by the snorkeler.

While diving fins are not as essential as a mask and snorkel, wearing them will make it easier for you to get to a lower depth more quickly. Pick open-toe fins that fit on your feet comfortably so they don’t raise blisters, and which are the right size for your swimming style. While a larger fin will allow you to swim faster, they are also heavier and require more effort from the swimmer.

Once you’ve purchased your equipment, maintain it regularly by soaking in fresh water after every use in order to avoid the buildup of salt crystals. And don’t forget rinse your equipment thoroughly to remove bits of sand.

Any family trip to the beach will be made more comfortable with a few folding portable chairs, some snacks in the cooler, and an outdoor umbrella for shade. Taking all the proper equipment along will make your beach family vacation easy and complete.
