Royal Holiday Club has a timeshare points program that is quite useful if you want to avoid trading through external trade companies such as Interval International or RCI. You can also pick up Royal Holiday Credits fairly cheaply on resale. I picked up a package of 15,000 holiday credits on Ebay for less than $800, and that was including my closing costs.
This would cost me a bit more to accomplish today as RHC has significantly raised their ownership transfer fees. It now costs $500 just to transfer a membership from one owner to another. With that in mind, if you are thinking about buying, you should consider purchasing more than just the minimum package.
The Royal Holiday minimum package is 15,000 points. This isn’t very many points though and will not get you a full week in the most desirable locations. If I were to do it over again, I would have purchased at least double the number of points or more in a single purchase. I’m not likely to make another RHC purchase now because of the much larger transfer fee, but if I were starting from scratch with many more points it would not have such a big impact, especially since Royal Holiday Club credits can be picked up relatively cheap.
Probably the best way for you decide how many RHC holiday credits you should purchase is to take a look at their properties and figure out which ones you are most likely to visit, how long you would want to stay and then take a look at the credit costs for your preferred number of nights and preferred unit size.
Also, keep in mind that points values will change seasonally. High season travel costs a lot more points than low or shoulder seasons. Some locations are, of course, high season 52 weeks a year, but most locations are not. So think about what time of year you want to travel. If you are tied to traveling during high season because of school schedules and/or work schedules, you should buy more credits in order to cover those dates.
