Many people travel to Spain every year for their vacations. A lot of people will go and visit the cities of Madrid, Barcelona, Granada, or Seville, but there is a large percentage of foreigners who come to Spain every year to visit the Costas. The Costa Blanca is in the south-east Spain and covers the area from just below the Torrevieja in the South all the way up as Alicante and Benidorm to finally reach Denia in the North.

One of the towns that you will encounter in the Costa Blanca is a town known as Sant Joan d’Alacant. This is a very large town for the area, as of 2008 there were about 21,500 inhabitants. But the population has only been increasing in any great way since the early part of this century. Although Sant Joan d’Alacant has a long history, the population was decimated during the Reconquista by the Christians in the early 13th century. When the Christians banished the Muslims, they really destroyed the area because much of the local knowledge about agriculture and related industries was in the hands of the expert Muslims. So when the Muslims were expelled, the town simply crumpled under the pressure. Many people emigrated to the nearby city of Alicante, and although there were sustained efforts at repopulation, this didn’t happen until one of the National roads linked the town in the 20th century.

Today, Sant Joan d’Alacant enjoys a thriving economy which is reliant on the city of Alicante which is nearby. Also, the beach of San Juan is only 2 km from the town centre is so there are a fair amount of tourists that are attracted to Sant Joan d’Alacant every year. Sant Joan d’Alacant accommodation therefore is fairly substantial. You will find the people here who are very friendly and the accommodation you will find should always be up to the highest standards in most places. Cheaper accommodation can be found also which means that anyone coming to Spain on a budget will find somewhere nice to stay.
