Owning a timeshare is a great way to take a family vacation and selling a timeshare that you are not using is a great way to raise some extra cash. The problem with timeshares is that many owners don’t use them. The American Resort Development Association claims that less than 40% of time share owners actually use their time shares on a regular basis.
Does that mean that you shouldn’t buy a time share?
If you want one then buy it, but realize what you are buying.
Most timeshare owners that that don’t use their time shares on a regular basis either exchange their weeks for weeks at another location or they rented the timeshare out for their time period. Either way they didn’t just leave it floating in the wind. Things change, life circumstances vary from year to year and you aren’t always able to take the vacation that you expected.
This headache can be too much for many people and they decide to sell. When you sell a timeshare you are selling your access to an exclusive club but you are also reducing your exposure to financial risk and a monthly or yearly payment. The lack of headache associated with getting rid of a time share is worth the extra money that you may spend in vacation costs without owning a timeshare. There are always many people selling timeshares for various reasons so finding a good deal is not usually difficult.
Selling a timeshare can also free you up to pursue other better deals. Timeshares have evolved in the past couple of years and there are now deals on the market with a lot more incentive than and perks than a in past decades. You may have also reached a stage in life where you are looking to trade up. The timeshare you bought 10 years ago may not fit your current lifestyle. If this is the case it is usually possible to improve your current holding.
Let’s be honest. Time shares are not always a good investment but you should not let that keep you from selling. You should also not put off selling just because you are tired of having your timeshare but unsure of how to sell it. It is easy to ignore things like timeshares that are often not front and center in your mind. But if you need to sell a timeshare don’t hesitate.
