Snow Vacation: Great For Kids!

by Family Traveler

in How to Plan

Every year in winter hundreds of families think about going to the snow, but they don’t do it.  Now, I don’t know the exact reason in each case, but I can guess pretty well because our household used to do the same thing.  Sure enough, there would always be a reason for not going.  Too much sleet.  Can’t be bothered getting snow chains on the car.  Don’t want to pack the car up.  Safety concerns.  What are we going to eat up there.  Too long a drive for a day trip.  Accommodation is too expensive.  What if it pours rain and sleet?  We don’t know the best slopes or snowy areas… there are one million reasons not to go to the snow, but I want to challenge you to do it this year anyway.  Your kids will love it and will remember it for a long time.  All kids love snow.

Our trick was simple.  We all got thermal underwear.  Sounds ridiculous?  Well, we worked out that the worst thing about a failed snow trip was the cold.  We all hate shivering.  So I made sure that everybody had thermals that would keep us nice and warm even if we got snowy and cold.  We really enjoyed ourselves in the snow and we made snowmen, igloos (little ones!), and snowballs and had a ball of a time – excuse the pun.  It really wasn’t a big issue to get everybody warm because the best thermal underwear traps one’s own body heat so it keeps you warm without needing any special gear or heating and nobody fights in the car about how hot the in-car thermostat should be because you’re actually so warm they you end up opening the windows!

Because we were warm and dry we were a lot less stressed, we enjoyed the drive, we didn’t mind buying food at the cafe on the way up the mountain, and sure it rained a bit but we just piled into the car and listening to some music while we waited for it to stop.  I totally recommend taking your kids to the snow this year – make sure everyone is warm, and stress will stay down, Fun will stay up!
